Innovative Choir Leading at The Royal Academy of Music is one of the Academy's strongest assets. In both Aarhus and Aalborg, we offer a rich choir conducting environment, and the Academy provides a wide range of programmes within this field, from inspirational courses and main subjects to a standalone MMus programme and postgraduate programmes.

The RAMA Vocal Center at the campus Aalborg is internationally recognized as a leading European center of innovation, education, postgraduate studies, and courses at the very highest level within rhythmic choir conducting. The center offers a strong professional environment that provides a framework for the Academy's MMus, soloist, diploma, and master's programmes as well as workshops and inspirational courses.

Standalone Master 

Full-time study: You can specialize in Innovative Choir Leading at the very highest level through a standalone Master (MMus) programme, partly via distance learning opportunities:


Main subject Bachelor

At Bachelor (BMus) level, you can choose Innovative Choir Leading as your main subject for one of the direction subjects possible under the programme:

At BMus level, Innovative Choir Leading is a mandatory main subject under the programme:

Supplementary main subject Master

At Master (MMus) level, you can choose Innovative Choir Leading as a supplementary main subject under the programmes



The Innovative Choir Conducting soloist programme is for students who have completed an MMus programme or have similar jazz/pop choir conducting qualifications, and who display an unusual aptitude for jazz/pop choir conducting.

Professional Master and Diploma courses  

Part-time studies: The Innovative Choir Conducting diploma and professional master's programmes are 2-year part time studies credited with 60 ECTS. The programmes are executed during 3 boot camps in Aalborg on each semester. Between the boot camps, the students will get supervision through video conferences.

Inspiration course on Innovative Choir Conducting

The inspiration course is for music teachers and others with at least 2 years of work experience within music education and choir conducting. On each semester, classes are divided by level and include 3 boot camps.

Symposium 2019

An exclusive Symposium on Vocal Painting facilitated by professor Jim Daus Hjernøe, the creator of The Intelligent Choir philosophy, is taking place in Aalborg every second year. Participants from the whole world will be able to explore the latest news on the topic under supervision by RAMA experts. Remote participation through high-speed video conference system is an option as well, without appearing at RAMA Vocal Center physically.

Summer Camp 2020

A unique four days Summer Camp for choral conductors is taking place every second year in Aalborg. Participants from the whole world come to RAMA Vocal Center to meet a renowned team of world-class teachers, ensuring the highest pedagogical and artistic level of rhythmic choral music.

Boot Camps in Aalborg

The boot camps in Aalborg are very intensive. For part-time students and course participants, they will join six boot camps per year from Thursday afternoon to Saturday evening, with the participation of approximate 50 students within this field from RAMA Vocal Center. Full-time students are joining the boot camps already from Monday to Saturday six times per year plus another two exclusive boot camps.
