The Danish music magazine “Klassisk” has launched a new series of articles entitled "What is your research field?” In the May edition the magazine has spoken with organ professor at the Academy, Ulrik Spang-Hanssen, about his book from 2014: "The music between the notes - Swing in classical music." In the article Spang-Hanssen tells about the background of his studies of (lack of) swing in classical music, based on his passion for jazz, which he also practice himself.

One of Ulrik Spang-Hanssen's points is that today we only hear half of what was originally played in, for example, the baroque; lots of embellishments and improvisations will be left out because we cannot prove exactly how to play everything that was not directly written in the score.

Spang-Hanssen also reveals that his next research project is improvisation in classical music; here is also a need for a cover of what we do know and what we don’t know - but perhaps could make an educated guess at.
