Composition of Rhythmic Music

The MMus (Composition of Rhythmic Music) degree at The Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus, 2-year study course (120 ECTS credits) (with a limited number of places) in which students acquire knowledge, skills, and qualifications to become composers at the highest level and entrepreneurs in music life. With its starting-point in their own musicianship students concentrate on the main subject of composition and related subjects and projects that will enable them to make choices with regard to their artistic career. The degree course may also provide the background for further studies as a soloist or for a PhD degree.

The Course Structure

The course structure has a constant focus on the subject of composition. The main area of study allows for specialization depending on the student’s profile in areas such as instrumentation, performance, or other relevant supporting subjects.

The entrepreneurial skills course, concluded after the third semester, provides students with the relevant tools to show their artistic qualities through self-management and entrepreneurial skills.

The MMus (Composition of Rhythmic Music) degree course concludes with a student-defined Masters project, based on their interests and needs, which also serves as part of their specialization in rhythmic composition.

The Course Subjects

The course subjects are divided into the following fields:

  • Main study area: Subjects where students are practising composers plus subjects that support this aspect
  • Entrepreneurial studies: Subjects and projects where students gain experience as initiators and leaders of dynamic processes and acquire tools to manage a career in music
  • Masters project: In addition to guidance on their project, students are prepared through project-related studies

The elements in the course are credited with ECTS points based on an assessment of the workload in the subjects.
