The emphasis is on music at the DJM library. The library has departments in both Aalborg and Aarhus – both with opening hours within the academy opening hours.
The purpose of the library is to support the academy’s education, research, as well as artistic and pedagogical development work.
The library focuses on collection and communication of relevant information and knowledge. Students, teacher, and other employees at DJM have access to this information through user-friendly systems and professional guidance of high quality.
The library holds large collections of scientific literature, sheet music, CDs, DVDs, online resources, etc. The collections consist of approxiamtely 45,000 scores, 9,000 books, 8,000 CDs, 500 DVDs, and subscriptions for 60 magazines. Furthermore, the library holds a large collection of choir sheet music within both classical and rhythmic music. The library also holds a CD collection of electronic music and copies of works made by DIEM composers (Denmark's National Center of Electronic Music) at DJM. Finally, you may find a large collection of violin, clarinet, trombone, and double bass sheet music.
Students and employees at DJM have access to the collections and may borrow copies. The loan period for all material is 1 month. Other people may use the material at the premises and may to some extent order the material through bibliotek.dk. Searching the database is open to the public. However, online reservations are only available for students and employees at DJM.
The library focuses more and more on digital resources. At the moment, more than 10 academically relevant Danish and international databases are available to students and employees.
Other facilities at the library include:
Listening booths, TV with VCR, study facilities, PCs for searching the Internet/library database, soft chairs and sofas for relaxing and immersion.
At the beginning of programme/semester and in connection with introduction to e-learning, introductions to the use of the library will be given to all new students. Furthermore, all bachelor and master students are offered a course in information searching and source criticism in connection with projects.
The library is also involved in the large orchestra projects/chamber music projects since the material is obtained by the library. The library also distributes and collects the material for returning.
DJM has set about several projects in order to enhance e-learning, strengthening the user's competences for making digital independent works, use the technological tools and services for visualising own competences and present oneself online. By presenting oneself online, the user will gain large possibility for creating network, enter collaboration, and making oneself visible on the "market".
Information competence and handling digital information are significant competences in the 21st century. DJM intends to create a closer collaboration between tuition, research, and the library. National and international experiences document that collaboration between these parties increase the quality of the e-learning.
In connection with the development of e-learning, information and knowledge resources will be developed and integrated in collaboration with the library. By using DOI codes on links for relevant electronic library services, a joint academic electronic knowledge base to be used online in tuition will be established in collaboration between DJM teachers and students. This will make it possible to offer tuition and resources to students – also from other countries – but it will also create visibility about the electronic resources and increase the students' understanding and use of the library's services. Furthermore, it will also be possible to involve the library in preparation of exercises that will increase the students' information competences in the online tuition. The special thing about DJM and other art producing educational institutions is that they are very much oriented towards artistic presentation and production rather than analysing works. This means that the library and the information competences must be aimed at supporting presentation and production of music.
